Imam A supreme religious leader of the Shi'ite Islamic sect. Imams descended directly from Ali, the cousin of Mohammed. The line of Imams ended after the 12th Imam, Al-Mahdi, disappeared. Until they reappear, the Ayatollahs guide the Shi'ite community.
